Steve and his family hit Shelter Bay again this past weekend, fishing prettttyyyyyyyyy slooowwwwww! Here's his report:
|
"Finally got out camping and fishing again after missing
the last couple weeks. Water is now up to the last parking area from
the top at Shelter Bay and with the flood plains on the river now
underwater the lake has gotten really mirky and surprisingly warm.
Saturday we flogged all our favorite lures and areas from about
1030 until 2 and then again later in the afternoon from 3 to 5 while
we baked in the hot sun and no breeze. If you couldn't smell the
word skunk coming well that's exactly what happened. Eating dinner
we watched fish jumping in the floating debris so tried some
different tactics with mepps and other smaller lures just under the
surface out front of the rec site and still nothing. Others were
reporting the same results. One older couple figured it had to do
with the new moon. Who knows lots of excuses and no fish.
Sunday we gave it another try and figured we'd troll south to
maybe cleaner water and hungrier trout but the results were nearly
the same. After trollling for a couple hrs we decided to hit the
mouth of a creek and try some spincasting when my son had a nice
size bull follow his mepps right to the boat but never hit it. A few
casts later I had a hit on a spoon and then watched as the rainbow
turned away and I just saw the huge red band on its side and that
was it for the day. The fish just weren't interested in hitting the
lures."

Thanks for the reports Steve, sounds like that water's going to have to clean up a bit or something!

There was the annual Bill King Derby over at Balfour (Kootenay Lake) on the May long weekend and a couple of our local anglers got into some nice fish! Here's Dave Kimble's report from the event:
Fishing was totally awesome on Kootenay
lake on the May long
weekend. On the Saturday I caught nine bows between 24-inches and 29-inches.
Since only one fish had been measured in ( they go strictly by length not
weight) I turned in my 29-inch fish (photo)
for second place. All were
caught on bucktails. My fish was quickly bumped into third place where it
stayed until Sunday evening when my buddy Jim Sutherland bumped me off the
board with his winning trout. (photo) Jim
went home all smiles with a nice
trophy and nearly $1300.00 in his pocket.
All the fish were right on top this time of year and nearly everyone was
catching numerous five-to-ten-pound bows. May is obviously a great time to
fish on Kootenay.

Thanks for the report Dave, those were sure nice clean bows!

A great fishing report from Steve over on the Arrow!

"I started off with a silver/red j plug and
within a half hour a hefty bull trout was netted so I switched up to
a T50 Flatfish in Silver Blue and sure enough another bull trout
but my son figured out the rainbows and landed a 23" rainbow and kokanee Sunday on an orange apex. Monday he wasn't giving up that
orange apex and landed two more rainbow in the 15-18" range and
another kokanee while dad landed yet another bull but it was
exciting as it was a double header so while I brought the largest
bull of the weekend to the boat my son was fighting an aerobatic
rainbow waiting for the net to be available. Mom and daughter
weren't too happy that none of their lures had any action include
our usual weapons with the silver apex, rainbow apex, and even a
different variation of the orange apex, spoons and then at the very
end she decided to put on an apex that never gets used it is half
pink and half yellow with the silver milar sticker on it which had a
huge hit and took a pile of line but i think the drag was way to
tight and ripped the hook out as there was still a piece of lip on
the hook.
All in all a great weekend of fishing given we
spent maybe 4 hrs Sunday and another 3 Monday with 8 fish landed.
Not everyone was as successful but it seemed like most were at least
getting some fish. A couple guys were catching rainbows off the
boulders along the shoreline.
An interesting note is this is the first
summer in the three years living here that we have caught kokanee on
Arrow Lake even when we've tried targeting them in the past and this
year we are getting them as incidental bycatch most trips out so it
could be a good sign that the kokanee population is health which
should translate into hopefully more and bigger bows and bulls.
Steve"
Thanks Steve, I've tried most of the stuff that you have but not with the same success, you must have them tamed better than me! |
